Put down the red pen.

Editing isn’t just about correcting. It doesn’t have to be punishing, nerve-racking, or tedious. Editing is also an act of nurturing—not only pulling up weeds but also coaxing new growth, identifying and developing what’s right while refining what’s “wrong.”

Your story knows what it wants to be, and an edit should play to its strengths. I’ll honor your vision as I help you achieve it.

manuscript evaluation

Done with your first draft? This assessment is a cost-effective answer to the question “Now what?” You’ll receive an analysis of your manuscript that offers high-level feedback on big-picture aspects like content, structure, tone, genre conventions, and commercial viability to lay out your strengths, weaknesses, and next steps.

Developmental Edit

When a draft is finished, it’s easy to be too close to your work to identify its issues and—more dauntingly—devise a plan for addressing them. A developmental edit offers a fresh pair of eyes, providing both a constructive big-picture overview of your book and highly specific small-scale suggestions. This option is right for you if you’re at the beginning of the editing process and want to perfect the content and flow of your story before polishing at the sentence level.

You’ll receive a thorough, thoughtful critique on plot, pacing, structure, themes, tone and voice, setting and world-building, character development, continuity, and other global concerns, as well as hundreds of in-manuscript suggestions for fine-tuning language and details. A character list and synopsis will also be included if applicable.

Line & copy edit

Your story is full realized and ready to shine—time to polish every word. Fall in love with language again as we explore its nuances.

Line editing is a close analysis of your prose, while copyediting focuses on the mechanics of your sentences. As a lover of language with an eagle eye for grammar, I find the two inseparable. A line and copy edit will meticulously cover:

  • fact-checking

  • continuity issues

  • grammar and syntax

  • stylistic consistency

  • clarity and readability

  • tone and voice

  • repetitive, flabby, or florid prose

  • opportunities for descriptive language

With a line and copy edit, you will receive:

  • a critique offering constructive feedback

  • a style sheet documenting stylistic guidelines applied

  • a list of legitimate, reliable resources used in fact-checking

  • a character list and a chapter-by-chapter synopsis, if applicable

  • a marked-up copy showing all grammar and language edits and a clean copy to move forward with

Proofread

The final step in the editing process, a proofread is a detailed sweep of the finished manuscript to catch any remaining typos, errors accidentally inserted during previous revisions, stylistic inconsistencies, and awkward formatting issues. This is for the author who has already undergone at least one round of professional copyediting.

INDEX

Far more than a list of names and key terms, a well-done professional index provides an intuitively navigable, thorough, and illuminating road map to your book. This requires a nuanced and clever human touch that list-generating software simply can’t replicate.
